One of autcrafts players left the server today because there gamepass ran out :( They left me Majora_The_Demon a book to let staff and players read. So the next time I am on Let me know if you would like to see the book and we will be awaiting the return of that play :).

They'll be back in 2026 when they get the gamepass again. It's unfortunate but just how it is for some people.

what did they mean by gamepasses? do people own minecraft for a limited time?

Xbox gamepass is a subscription, and it allows you to play games for free, if you do the monthly payment. But when it runs out, you can’t play the games you got with gamepass anymore, until you renew the subscription, or buy the game

You'd need at least Game Pass Essential, in order to access Minecraft: Bedrock and Java.
